Nevada's contractor law does not apply to work to repair or maintain property worth less than $1,000, including labor and materials, unless: a building permit is required; the work is of a type done by a plumbing, electrical, refrigeration, heating or air-conditioning contractor; the work is in a classification that significantly affects public health, safety and welfare; the work is part of a larger project worth $500 or more, or was split into contracts under $500 to get around the law; or the person doing it is a licensed contractor or a licensee's employee (NRS 624.031, subsection 6). Most appliance installation jobs in the Las Vegas valley that need a building permit fall outside the under $1,000 exemption, so the person doing them needs a license unless another exemption applies. (source: Nevada Legislature)
The State Contractors Board lists the handyman exemptions on its Handyman Exemptions page, including work to repair or maintain property valued at less than $1,000, unless conditions such as a required building permit or the type of work apply. (source: Nevada State Contractors Board)
Licensed contractors working outside their class
A licensed contractor may do work outside their classification when it is worth less than $1,000 and needs no building permit, except plumbing, electrical, refrigeration or air-conditioning work (NRS 624.220). (source: Nevada Legislature)
Finished products
The contractor law also does not apply to the sale or installation of any finished product, material or article of merchandise that is not fabricated into and does not become a permanent fixed part of the structure (NRS 624.031, subsection 7). (source: Nevada Legislature)
